Welsh contractor wins Scottish wind farm job

Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK has been awarded a multi-million-pound wind farm contract in south west Scotland.

Fred Olsen Renewables appointed the North Wales-based firm as principal contractor on Windy Standard III, a 20-turbine wind farm in Dumfries and Galloway.

Data intelligence provider Glenigan values the project at £40m.

The scheme was consented in 2021 and is designed to generate 87.6 megawatts of electricity – enough to power more than 130,000 UK homes per year.

Jones Bros’ works package includes ground investigations, excavation and backfilling for cabling, as well as the installation of reinforced concrete foundations.

The firm will also create more than 10km of new access roads and associated crane hardstands to facilitate turbine delivery and erection.

Project manager Jonathan Maitland said the contract added to Jones Bros’ growing wind farm portfolio in Scotland. “We look forward to working closely with Fred Olsen Renewables to add to the first two phases of the complex,” he said.

The contractor’s team will include 45 site-based staff, with further recruitment planned locally.

Jones Bros will use an onsite batching plant to reduce vehicle movements and improve delivery efficiency.

Fred Olsen Renewables chief executive Sofie Olsen Jebsen said the project formed part of the developer’s wider commitment to the UK renewables market. “Windy Standard III will support Scotland’s energy security and contribute to the Clean Power 2030 target,” she said.

First power generation is expected by winter 2026.
