Newcastle-based Surgo Construction has entered administration.
The regional contractor appointed administrators on 14 March, leaving former staff to seek new jobs elsewhere. The company had been trading for over 100 years, according to its website.
Surgo turned over £14.4m in its last published financial accounts, for the year ending 31 October 2022, when it also employed an average of 66 staff members during the year.
On its website, the company said it had “diversified, with much success, into many sectors, namely education, energy from waste, commercial, health and care, leisure and retail, as well as residential”.
Its construction projects typically ranged in value from £3m to more than £20m, according to the website, with projects mostly based in Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle and elsewhere in Northumberland.
The company had been in a legal battle with Bellway Homes since September 2022, with each claiming the other owed money and seeking enforcement of adjudication decisions. Last month, Bellway Homes served Surgo a winding-up petition relating to alleged non-payment.
On Friday morning (15 March), a barrister for Bellway, Nicholas Kaplan, confirmed during a brief hearing in the Construction and Technology Court that Surgo had appointed administrators a day earlier.
