On a day that begins like any other, Hal receives a mysterious letter bequeathing her a substantial inheritance. She realizes very quickly that the letter was sent to the wrong person—but also that the cold-reading skills she’s honed as a tarot card reader might help her claim the money.
Soon, Hal finds herself at the funeral of the deceased…where it dawns on her that there is something very, very wrong about this strange situation and the inheritance at the centre of it.
Not my favorite Ruth Ware book, but I still found it hard to put down.
Hal is a young woman who was raised by her single mother. Her mom was killed when Hal was eighteen. She doesn’t know who her father is and doesn’t know any family members. She’s struggling to pay her bills and owes money to a loan shark. So when a letter comes from a lawyer saying Hal is in her grandma’s will, Hal decides it might be worth pretending to get a bit of money. She finds out that there are three uncles and some other family. Their sister has been missing for decades and they embrace Hal right away. She finds it hard to lie to them and feels connected to them somehow. She also thinks it would be great to have a family. While staying at the estate, Hal starts finding out family secrets and starts looking into who her father is. She’s just not sure how much longer she can lie and also finds herself in danger.
I gave this book 4 stars.
