As the Iowa abortion ban takes effect, Vice President Kamala Harris is calling for action.
On July 29, the Harris for President campaign is launching the Fight for Reproductive Freedom week of action as Iowa becomes the 22nd state to enact an abortion ban. On Monday, Iowa will officially outlaw most abortions after six weeks—a period before many women even know they’re pregnant.
The Harris campaign is kicking off the week of action with a video message from Vice President Harris in which she calls out Donald Trump for enabling Iowa’s abortion ban: “What this means is that one in three women of reproductive age in America lives in a state with a Trump abortion ban,” she says. “So what we need to do is vote.”
“When I am president of the United States, I will sign into law the protections for reproductive freedom,” she adds.

Reproductive Freedom for All CEO Mini Timmaraju will have an event in Arizona on July 31, while reproductive rights activist Hadley Duvall will be speaking in Wisconsin and Michigan throughout the week. Radio host Ryan Hamilton will headline a Harris for President event in Las Vegas immediately ahead of JD Vance’s visit to the state
Second gentleman Doug Emhoff will also host a reproductive freedom event in New Hampshire on Wednesday evening.
Since Roe. v. Wade was overturned in June 2022, nearly two dozen states have implemented abortion bans. Project 2025—a conservative blueprint for the next Republican president—lays out a plan to take things even further with nation-wide abortion laws and decreased access to emergency contraception. According to CNN, the manifesto was was cowritten by multiple former Donald Trump appointees.
