Southern Water has appointed three contractors to a £466m framework covering reactive and planned maintenance across its wastewater network until 2030 under the AMP8 asset management period.
The firm selected Lanes Group, McAllister Bros and Cappagh Browne Utilities on a four-lot framework that will run across its operational region, which includes Kent, Sussex, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
The largest share of the work, worth £272m, has been awarded to Lanes Group for operate and maintain services. These cover initial responses to customer contacts, sewer CCTV and cleansing, and patch lining of pipes.
Cappagh Browne Utilities has secured the £120m civils and rehabilitation lot. This covers construction and repair work to existing wastewater networks across the southern counties.
McAllister Bros has been appointed to the £48m sewer lining lot, which involves rehabilitation of pipework using trenchless technologies.
Lanes Group has also won the £26m manhole maintenance contract. This work includes repair and replacement of assets across Southern Water’s sewerage system.
The contracts were awarded through a negotiated process with prior competition. A total of 14 tenders were received across all lots, including submissions from non-UK and EU-based firms.
Southern Water said the framework would support delivery of its ambitions under the Water Industry National Environment Programme and Water Resource Management Plan, and would allow greater integration of digital monitoring. Its sewer network already features 23,000 sensors and nearly 1,000 duration monitors.
The successful firms will be expected to deliver both reactive and planned maintenance and develop engineering solutions in line with the client’s technical standards. Southern Water has committed to a more proactive asset management approach during AMP8, driven by real-time data and condition-based monitoring.
The framework was awarded on 3 December 2024 and covers the period from 2025 to 2030. No further details have been disclosed regarding the architects or engineering design consultants involved.
