Carrie Underwood's Trump Inauguration Performance: Singer Releases a Statement After Backlash

While everyone is still reeling at the news that Carrie Underwood will be singing at Trump’s inauguration on January 20, the American Idol-winner herself has released a statement explaining her decision.

“I love our country and am honored to have been asked to sing at the Inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event,” Underwood told People. “I am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future.”

Carrie Underwood had kept her political views to herself for years, telling The Guardian in 2019, “I try to stay far out of politics if possible, at least in public, because nobody wins. It’s crazy. Everybody tries to sum everything up and put a bow on it, like it’s black and white. And it’s not like that.”

But now that Carrie Underwood has agreed to perform at Donald Trump’s inauguration, it’s not a leap to assume that her politics lean right. And to say that some of her fans are disappointed would be a massive understatement. One stan account on Twitter, for one, has already rebranded as a Megan Maroney account. The account formerly known as Carrie Underwood Charts commented, “She disappointed the entire generation z…she was our first country queen…Carrie sales have declined and will be none now she lost the support of lgbtq and poc community who loved her.”

Another stan account, Carrie Underwood UK, tweeted, “While I will always love and support
@carrieunderwood, this account will not be covering her upcoming appearance at Donald Trump’s inauguration nor any other comments/appearances she makes in support of this convicted felon.”

Other fans on Twitter have made similar comments in reaction to the news. “Can’t call for unity when you’re performing for the divider. Shame on you @carrieunderwood you’ve betrayed thousands of your fans,” wrote one. Another person tweeted, “carrie underwood being a trumpie isnt suprising at all, but it does sting a little.”
