The world may have not been expecting Kamala Harris’ Met Gala 2025 debut, but she made it a moment worth remembering.
The former vice president and 2024 Democratic presidential candidate made a surprise appearance for fashion’s biggest night in a custom black and white gown by Off-White, the luxury brand founded by the late iconic Black designer Virgil Abloh.
Though Harris was not seen on the carpet, the official social media channels for the Democratic Party shared photos of her look writing, “Kamala Harris stuns at the Met Gala.”

Vogue shared more about Harris’ stunning gown, designed by Off White creative director IB Kamara. The dress is made of cady silks to give “a deep, luxurious texture” with a statement sleeve and a pleated skirt. She was accompanied by her husband, Doug Emhoff, in Brunello Cucinelli.
“The true core of dandyism is rooted in confidence and strength,” Kamara told Vogue. “There is no person who exemplifies these characteristics more than Kamala D. Harris, someone who has overcome adversity and continues to be a beacon for so many. This is such an important moment for me and the whole Off-White community.”
Harris’ night at the Met marks the second time she has made a meaningful public appearance in less than a week, after previously keeping a low public profile since the November election. On Thursday night, she spoke at a gala for Emerge America, an organization that helps Democratic women run for office, in one of her first public remarks since her defeat by Donald Trump.
In her speech, Harris urged Americans to fight back against the fear being pushed by the Trump administration.
“President Trump and his administration, and their allies, are counting on the notion that fear can be contagious. They are counting on the notion that if they make some people afraid, it will have a chilling effect on others,” she said. “But what they have overlooked is that fear is not the only thing that’s contagious. Courage is contagious.” She added a call to action: “Let’s lock it in.”
