The well of memorable Met Gala looks runs deep.
Typically, the first Monday in May marks the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala (or, just plainly, the Met Gala). Since it first launched in 1948, the event has been a seemingly never-ending red-carpet parade of celebs—from fashion designers and Hollywood starlets to pop music icons and sports champs—who all come out to raise funds for the Costume Institute.
This upcoming Monday, May 5, these stars will congregate in New York City to celebrate the museum’s upcoming fashion exhibit, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” which explores the “indelible style of Black dandies, from the 18th century through to the present day.”
Appropriately, some of Hollywood’s best-dressed men and leaders in menswear are joining Vogue’s Anna Wintour as co-chairs of the event, including Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, and Pharrell Williams—with LeBron James serving as an honorary chair. Considering Williams is the men’s creative director of Louis Vuitton, expect a lot of great looks from the French luxury fashion house.
The evening’s dress code is “Tailored for You,” which will hopefully inspire celebrities to push the boundaries of tailored menswear and embrace the opportunity to highlight Black designers. In year’s past, the most memorable looks have come from those who commit to the theme instead of playing it safe or treating the event like any other red carpet.
Remember Rihanna’s stunning yellow Guo Pei dress for “China: Through the Looking Glass?” Or Claire Danes’s light-up Zac Posen for “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology?” What about Zendaya’s Joan of Arc moment in honor of “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination?”
We can think of so many Met Gala looks that will be forever etched in our memories. Scroll on through to see the most memorable Met Gala red carpet moments of all time.
