Ethiopia’s Tamirat Tola won a sensational gold in the men’s marathon on Saturday with an Olympic record time of 2:06.26.
Bashir Abdi of Belgium won silver while Kenya’s Benson Kipruto won bronze. A late surge saw Team GB’s Emile Cairess finish an impressive fourth.
Tola, who won the bronze in the 10,000-metre in the Rio Games, entered the marathon only two weeks prior owing to an injury to teammate Sisay Lemma.
